Wild species

The import and export of wild species

The cross-border traffic and trade of wild species, in accordance with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Animals and plants-CITES, is only possible with the submission of the appropriate authorisation or certification from the competent authority to a customs officer at the border customs office.
The competent authority for issuing the required authorisations or certificates in the Republic of Croatia is the National Institute for Nature Protection of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Nature.
Personal and household items, including specimens and hunting trophies, do not need to be subject to the appropriate authorisation, but they must meet one of the following conditions:
  • They must be a part of the personal luggage of the traveller who is coming from or going to a third country, or
  • They must be a part of the personal belongings of the person who is changing their residence by moving from a third country to the Union, or from the Union to a third country, or
  • They are hunting trophies that the travellers won themselves and they are being imported later.
