In 2026, the K-9 Guide and Service Dog Training Centre Department was established within the Mobile Units Sector of the Customs Administration.

“Max Croatia Customs” was also founded within the Department.

The primary scope of work of the K-9 Centre covers the planning and implementation of the training of dog handlers and the training of service dogs for various purposes, conducted either independently or in cooperation with external experts. The Centre carries out regular annual operational efficiency checks (licensing) of teams, dog selection and testing, as well as organising ongoing professional training for customs officers who serve as service dog handlers. Additionally, the Department analyses and plans the procurement of specialised equipment required for the Centre's operations and dog training.

At an international level, the K-9 Centre implements and develops cooperation in the training of instructors, handlers, and service dogs, continuously aligning its curricula and syllabi with international educational qualification frameworks. For the purpose of exchanging best practices, the Centre maintains contact and active cooperation with the customs administrations of European Union member states and neighbouring countries, as well as with other state administration bodies of the Republic of Croatia.

The K-9 Centre is located within the Bregana Advanced Training Centre complex and utilises a 1,059 m² building with space for the staff and for the accommodation and breeding of animals. There is also a separate 128 m² facility for the accommodation of animals. The K-9 unit also has a dedicated 3,500 m² outdoor course for training service dogs, with a double fence. In general, the space is suitable for accommodation of 17 service dogs in separate dwellings.
